Review of Concert at
Finchley Progressive Synagogue Dec 04

Shir Delight.

Moving easily between contemporary Israeli popular music and much loved Klezmer and Ladino music, and not forgetting traditional melodies familiar to us all, in and out of synagogue, “Shir” energetically shook us out of our customary winter torpor on Sunday 19 December.

Led by Maurice Chernick on clarinet, Ivor Goldberg (guitar), Piotr Jordan (violin) and Steve Rose (bass), transported us “im wasser un’ feuer “ to the shtetls of Central and Eastern Europe and urged us to “Lech LaMidbar”, Go to the Desert!  Whilst Laoise Davidson accompanied us on our visit to the shtetl, it was our own Debbie Rosenberg who sinuously took us on our journey to the burning south.

Listening to “Bei Mir bist du Shein”, one couldn’t help but be struck by the close relationship between Klezmer and Jazz, helped undoubtedly by the Django Rheinhardt accents of Ivor Goldberg’s guitar and the Stephane Grapelli accents of Piotr Jordan’s violin.   Some of Klezmer’s roots lie in the gypsy musical culture of South East Europe and Django Rheinhardt’s jazz playing was always strongly marked by his own gypsy background. For those erstwhile fans of the “Hot Club de France”, this was a most enjoyable bonus.

As Maurice Chernick points out in his notes to “Shir”’s CD, “From the Heart”, Klezmer music is about joy and this “Shir” provided generously and richly, prompting members of the audience to leave their seats and dance in the aisles. Sweet vocals, too, from Laosia Davidson, Maurice Chernick and Ivor Goldberg.

As the Israel Committee went through a period of doubt in its efforts to bring  “SHIR” to FPS, it was most gratifying to be able to issue a cheque to ORT for £127, from the proceeds, to be used for Israeli projects, more particularly Ethiopian children in need.

As I wrote this, Shirs Ivor Goldberg passed on their thanks for our hospitality and the very warm reception we gave them. They look forward to playing for us again some time.
